Hiring Guide

How to hire a great mobile game developer

Hiring the ideal game developer for your ambitious project isn’t as difficult as it once used to be.

With a plenty of mobile game developers at your disposal, making the right choice can sometimes be a complex task. Thus, in order to find that perfect candidate, there are a few things that every employer/company must consider:

1) Make sure your potential game developer loves games

No matter how experienced a game developer is, they may fail to deliver what is expected of them solely for the reason that they aren’t passionate about what they develop.

There has never ever been a passionate game developer who, doesn’t like to play games. If as a game developer, one is not in the habit of playing new games, they will never get the correct idea of the pace at which the mobile-gaming landscape is changing.

As a result, such developers mostly remain stagnant – unwilling to learn new ideas and grow.

2) Possesses all the modern-day skills

A great mobile game developer is not limited to a particular aspect. So, the person you are looking to hire shouldn’t be either!

They should be good with, of course, the graphics, the programming part, the physics and the user-interface. In a nutshell, your future employee/freelancer needs to be well-acquainted with all the latest game development software and technology.

Speaking about technology, the game developer should be proficient at developing games in the Augmented Reality (AR) niche.

Furthermore, it will be a plus point if the candidate can work with all the major mobile game development tools like Unity, Unreal Engine, Corona SDK, Lumberyard and Cocos2D-x.

3) Should have decent games in their portfolio

Some mobile game developers specialize only in making basic games like Tic-Tac-Toe, 4 pictures 1 word, etc. Thus, if you are looking to hire game developers for your complex project, you may not be in need of such people.

The fact that you do not end up hiring amateur talent depends on whether you take a good look at the projects they have previously worked at.

4) Consider the feedback from former employers

Many great game developers are lazy and work on their own terms. They do not seem to care much about a company’s delivery commitments and vision.

Thus, if delivering mobile games on time is your organization’s topmost priority, you may find a little hard dealing with this particular lot.

Having a good look at a person’s previous employer feedback (or reviews on freelance portals) will help you decide if you can cope up with the person while he’s in your office.

5) See if they can work amiably in a team

Developing a game isn’t just one individual’s task, it’s a team work. Egotistical issues often arise among people when working in groups. Thus, maintaining a positive work environment is of the utmost importance for any employer.

This though can only be achieved if all the members of the team work as a single unit and leave their ‘blame-game’ and personal differences (if any) aside.

If you think that the person you are looking to hire may create a nuisance for other members of the team, it is better to let go of them and look at other prospects.

6) Ask them how long will they take to add Google Analytics, Facebook Share Dialog, AdMob Banner, Vungle, and PushWoosh to any app?

If your potential game developer says that it might take weeks or months for him to make these integrations, then he is probably not experienced at doing this. All these tasks do not take more than an hour even if done casually.

7) If they are comfortable providing the documentation

Documentations basically come in handy when your app is ready and you need another developer to make changes to its functionality. Hence, asking your would-be developer about the documentation aspect is a good practice before bringing them on-board.

8) Check if your freelance mobile game developer isn’t outsourcing projects.

The worst part about hiring a freelancer for any app or game project is that you don’t have many means to verify whether they are themselves working on the project or outsourcing it. Even reputed freelancers resort to this practice which may seem ‘bad’ and ‘unfair’ to many customers, only if they found out. But many novice customers have no way to do so.

The outsourcing ‘shenanigan’ basically involves taking projects from customers in developed countries and then handing it over to developers in countries with weaker currencies (with respect to the dollar) and cheap ‘labor’. Such ‘fake’ developers earn in dollars but pay less than half the money to the ‘real’ ones.

If despite repeating your requirements again and again, you are not getting what you expect from your freelance game developer, odds are high that they belong to the ‘fake’ lot.

So, there you have it folks! Keep all these points in mind before hiring the next ‘best mobile game developer’ and we are sure that you wouldn’t regret your choice.
